with Burgundy Rose
This workshop will explore innovative ways you can play with self-tying and self-suspension on a single point to create possibilities for fluid movement and dynamic transitions.
We will focus on getting creative with gravity, and over two full days Burgundy Rose will show you a range of partial-suspension and full-suspension shapes and principles you can play with and adapt according to your unique style.
Burgundy Rose is a trained circus performer, and will also give the option of demonstrating techniques for spinning in the air for those that are interested in integrating this into their practice.

Burgundy Rose (she/they) is an interdisciplinary performer and rope artist interested in using the body as a tool for expression. They have a background in the performing arts, and this influences their approach to ropes and style. Dynamic, playful and attentive, they are endlessly curious about the body and thrives on the intensities - physical and psychological - that rope can bring out.
Burgundy Rose started learning Shibari in 2016 at Anatomie Studio in London, and has learnt from an extensive range of international educators and collaborators. They are currently most inspired by blending the intensity and aesthetics of ‘traditional’ Japanese Shibari with a more movement-based and deconstructed ‘contemporary’ style.
In 2019 Burgundy Rose was awarded a ‘Developing Your Creative Practice’ grant from Arts Council England to spend a period of time exploring rope, dance and physical theatre where they trained with Jasmin Vardimon Dance Theatre Company (JV Intensive) and with Arnoys Nicolas, a rope artist in Brussels. They also trained on the degree programme at Circomedia, a circus school in Bristol, specialising in aerial hoop.
Their shibari teaching and creative performances have taken them across London, Manchester, Bristol, Berlin, Prague, Athens, Rotterdam and Portland (USA).

You should have some experience managing uplines (either self-tying or tying others) and should already know some suspendable harnesses.
-
Bring:
- At least 6-8 hanks of jute rope
- A sling and a suspension ring
- Safety shears
- Notebook and pen to take notes
- Bottle of water and snacks
Optional:
- A swivel if you are interested in spinning
- Carabiners for upline management
Please note: Self-suspension is demanding on the body and energy levels so please eat a good breakfast before arriving and have snacks throughout the day. There will be a full lunch break in the middle of the day, and short comfort breaks throughout depending on the group energy levels.
